Career Development Workshop

On January 8, Jayne Mattson, Senior Vice President at Keystone Associates and a MA HOBY corporate board member, conducted a career development workshop which was attended by 8 alumni. Jayne reviewed their resumes and cover letters and made suggestions for improvements. She went over how to network and to find job opportunities. Then, she gave them tips for how to conduct themselves in an interview and had them do some proctice interviews. The workshop concluded with tips on how to negotiate the best contract once an offer for a job is gotten. Below are some comments made by the attendees:

"The Alumni Association workshop is an excellent way to ready yourself for career choices and decisions. Jayne did an excellent job preparing me for my shadowing experience. Coming out of her workshop, I had a more focused approach in my internship and job search. I had a better idea where to look for jobs. She was able to answer all of my questions regarding interviews and resumes, and I would highly recommend the Alumni Association workshop."

"It was a great experience and I'm so glad I participated. Saturday was a very insightful day. I appreciated the tailored advice about my own situation and resume. You made a great deal of effort to customize the day to the needs of the participants, which is not an easy thing to do. Your emphasis on both the heart and the head was a really helpful framework for me. Often people think you have to explain your way into getting a job, but that is only part of it. The best part for me was the concrete examples of cover letters and resumes as well as actual conversations to have in a certain situation. For those in HOBY who might wonder if this opportunity is worthwhile, I would say you can't afford not to attend. The job market is so competitive in the 21st century and the information and advice you get in this seminar is invaluable to help set you apart. Plus it is FREE! What is not to love??
